You can download and use the firmware for free. There is also an option to quickly switch between Magic Lantern and the original software. The software is installed on the memory card and can be easily removed. You use it at your own risk, the developer is not taking any responsibility if something will happen to your camera. Magic Lantern is an unofficial hack that is not allowed to use by Canon. But I still use Resolve to apply LOG gamma (like Canon LOG or Blackmagic film gamma) and transcode the files to ProRes 422 LT. MLVFS is so quick to mount a card full of MLV files as Cinema DNG, which can then be opened directly in Resolve 14 with fluid playback and editing of raw video. RGB histogram with RAW support, the waveform for perfect green screen lighting, vectorscope for color tones and custom Kelvin white balance. I find the workflow much improved from 2013. Magic Lantern enables in Canon EOS motion detection, silent pictures mode, custom vignetting for lens correction, zebras for under/overexposed areas, focus peaking for quickly checking focus, Magic Zoom window to fine-tune focus, crop mark overlays for 16x9 bars or any custom shape, Spotmeter in live view, false color for precise exposure control. We got also full control over H264 bitrate and recording framerate, option to record HDR videos, voice tags for photos and video and 14-bit uncompressed RAW video to quick CF/SD cards. Magic Lantern add to your camera features like trap focus, follow focus, rack focus, custom AF patterns, automatic auto-focus micro adjustment (DotTune AFMA), bracketing for exposure, flash, or depth-of-field, in-camera intervalometer or custom bulb timer for extra-long exposures.
